The wetlands around Canning River are seasonal. This image was made in Autumn just before the first significant rains. It usually takes several rainy days before water appears on the surface. With the first rain, the hard ground which has been baked all through summer, slowly becomes soft. Then it becomes muddy.

As it rains during the night the water level rises and suddenly a large expanse of water has appeared on the landscape. Where there was hard ground just a week before now is a small lake that will stay all through winter. Waterbirds gather around and inhabit the wetlands.

One of the interesting things about the samphire during Autumn, just before the wetlands flood, is that it changes colour. It goes from a green colour to a reddish pink hue. It is a soft hue and I find it particularly attractive sign, heralding a change in the season. I have explored several compositions of pink-red samphire with both 4×5 velvia and using digital capture.
