Stormlight Publishing 25 years of South West Postcards, tells the story of starting out with one camera and one lens and going on to publishing 1.5 million postcards later. Hardcover with 70 images. Copies available online.
Two images made within an hour show vastly different light. This image of Surf, Rabbit Hill, Yallingup, was published in 1992 and became a hugely successful postcard. It was made with a short zoom lens but still required some cropping in the final drum scan for colour separations (before photoshop!).
Early morning photography provides many opportunities. It was the pay off for leaving my warm sleeping bag, hiking with my head lamp along a track leading through karri forest, until I came to my river location.
This image was made in 2012 to replace an older version I had decided to retire. The retired image was made in 1997. It first appeared as a postcard and published tens of thousands of times. It has also appeared in magazines and books.
I am delighted to have several images and a short essay published in this month’s Looking Glass Magazine. That two of those images were made literally down the street from where I live in suburban Perth is even more satisfying!

Storm light Margaret River was made one winter’s day in 1983 at my grandparents’ farm. It was August and severe cold fronts had hit the south west for 5 or 6 days solid. This photograph gave me the idea to name my publishing imprint Stormlight Publishing.
