Alex Bond founded Stormlight Publishing in 1989.

Alex Bond started Stormlight Publishing in 1989. He is the first publisher to create and maintain a series of postcards for over 25 years which has specialised in landscapes of Western Australia's national parks.

The Leeuwin Naturaliste Series of the Margaret River region were the first press run of postcards to be published. Success with these cards allowed for the publication of new images from other national parks, creating a further four series of postcards.

The Southern Forests Series included Pemberton, Northcliffe and Walpole regions. The South Coast Series included Denmark, Albany and Esperance. The Stirling Range Series and the Porongurup Series took in the mountainous region of south west WA.

With time new publications were added such as greeting cards, gift cards, posters, calendars and books. All focus on the unique landscape of south west Western Australia.

Stormlight Publishing's unique Western Australian publications

Stormlight Publishing has consistently produced unique award winning publications. It has received both State and National Print Awards for excellence in print.

In 2009 my book  Pemberton Wine Region Western Australia was the nominated for two Gourmand Book Awards in Paris. It was the Australian finalist for "Best Wine and Spirits Photography/Illustration book" and "Best book on New World Wines".

In 2016 I made the decision was made to end the postcard series. After a quarter of a century publishing and distributing postcards it was time for a change. In 2017 I published Stormlight Publishing 25 years of south west postcards with collection of 70 postcard images.

I intend to be more involved in personal photographic projects which will include more time photographing and making hand printed black and white prints.  I will continue to provide the current range of postcard publications to my retail outlets while stock lasts. Greeting cards and books can be purchased online.

Storm light Margaret River Western Australia

Margaret River Region storm light margaret river

Storm light Margaret River was made one winter’s day in 1983 at my grandparents’ farm. I remember the five or so days that we stayed it bucketed with rain and squally winds. It really started at Australind, with the wind driving the rain horizontally into the coast. By the time I had reached my grandparents’ farm in Margaret River it was raining non stop. Over the next few days the light was gluey grey punctuated with startling sunlit contrasts as low clouds rapidly scudded across the sky.

The film was Kodachrome, the exposure made with my Pentax LX and a Pentax 100mm lens, hand held with the camera jammed against the front door for stability. I can’t be sure of the shutter but it was likely to be 1/15 sec or slower, aperture at its widest f2.8. This photograph gave me the idea to name my publishing imprint Stormlight Publishing.
